Welcome to Part 2 of our post on How to Get the Water Flowing After a Pipe Freezes!
4. Exposed Pipes
If the frozen pipe can be easily accessed, there are several ways you could thaw it. Here are four ways you could get the water flowing again in such a pipe:
Hair dryer- One of the simplest ways to warm a frozen pipe is with the aid of a hairdryer. Turn the dryer on and direct the heat at the pipe, starting with the part that is near the faucet. However, ensure you follow the precautions and that you don’t come into contact with any water while using the device.
A space heater or heat lamp- A space heater or a heat lamp should also assist in thawing a frozen pipe. Place the device where the heat will permeate to the frozen pipe. The indirect heat will quickly thaw the pipe. Of course, follow all the precautions and safety measures of the device and don’t bring the device in contact with water.
Hot towels- Take some hot towels that have been dipped into hot water and wrap them around the pipe to unblock the pipe slowly.
Heating tape- You can also apply electrical heating tape to the pipe. The tape will distribute heat to the pipe.
5. Enclosed Pipes
If the pipe cannot be accessed easily, you can:
1) Increase the temperature in the property- By turning the thermostat up, the increased heat could melt the ice blockage.
2) Infrared lamp- If you locate the area in the wall where the pipe is blocked, place an infrared lamp before that part of the wall. The heat permeating from the pipe may go through the wall and defrost the pipe.
3) Cut out a part of the wall- If you can do this, you could cut out a part of the drywall to get to the pipe and apply the thawing mentioned above procedures.
